We had a hot buffet breakfast for a good start this morning. A short drive brought us to Santa Barbara where we enjoyed the Pacific coast, walking on the long wharf, talking to local fishermen and even seeing whale and porpoise offshore.
We continued north past horse farms and an ostrich farm to the Danish town of Solvang. The architecture makes the whole town look like Denmark, complete with a windmill and storks on roofs. There were lots of shops and plenty of restaurants selling abelskivers which most of us tried. But if anyone had wanted to find a bar, they would have been in trouble. We found out that there was only one in town, and it was in the basement, under a Mexican restaurant.
Our sun disappeared while we were shopping, and with temperatures in the mid 50s plus a good breeze, one couple bought fleece jackets as a Solvang souvenir.
Our afternoon drive was through the coastal mountains. Some of them were left grass covered for pasture, while others had been planted into vineyards. Then we passed through a valley with fields of strawberries and vegetables.
We stay tonight just south of the Hearst Castle, within walking distance of the Pacific.-Laurel Johnson,Tour Director
