It was crisp out this morning but clear and dry. The hotel sent us on our way with "provisions for the journey," a snack pack that had been thoughtfully put together. On our drive we noticed an immediate change of scenery. There were no mountains, the trees were only a fraction of yesterday's and the flat farm fields reminded us of home. After we came into Indiana, we drove through Amish country. One man was plowing his field using six horses. The farther west we drove, the wetter the fields were, and no one was out working. By the time we got to Chicago, there wasn't a cloud in the sky and we were enjoying the sunshine. The 104th floor observation deck of the Sears Tower is undergoing some reconstruction, so our view was from the 99th floor. We could see Lake Michigan, sports stadiums, busy interstates and all of Chicago. In fact, they say that on a clear day like today, the view covers 50 miles and the states of Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. It really was spectacular. But we also noticed how much smaller Chicago is than New York City. Tonight we are staying in Janesville, WI, having driven in four states today.
