This morning we woke up to the sound of thunder, combined with the smoky haze of something like 69 fires burning in the state. We left Tok and the rain began. It poured all morning, making it difficult to see the agricultural fields by Delta Junction. The rain stopped so that we couldfind the pig (from the pipeline) at our Delta Junction visitor center stop. It rained throughout our time at Rika's Roadhouse, but the old roadhouse, garden and outbuildings along the Tanana River was still a lovely stop. Then the rain quit, the sun came out and the rest of the day
was perfect. We saw the Alaska pipeline, a snowshoe hare, stopped to take pictures of a moose eating in the middle of a pond and had the chance to either shop for gifts or sit on Santa Claus' lap in North Pole. Just outside of Fairbanks we learned about gold mining from a couple who operate a nearby mine, and then had the opportunity to pan for gold. It takes awhile to get the right dip and swirl action! Fortunately, help is available. Some of us are wearing the results of our work. The evening was spent at Pioneer Park and the Alaska Salmon Bake. What great food, with a prime rib, Alaska salmon, cod and halibut buffet. Tonight is a chance to see daylight at midnight.-Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
