Alaska Fly/Fly Day 9

Today we explored Anchorage. We walked through the flower gardens in a city park, drove past buildings including the sod-roofed visitor center with its hanging baskets and flower gardens and saw salmon in Ship Creek. One man pulled in two while we were there. The view from Resolution Park included the mountain known as Sleeping Lady, the port of Anchorage and
the tidal flats of Knik Arm. We spent time in the Alaska History section of the Anchorage Museum, looking at artifacts from the different native groups and displays about gold mining, homesteading and the pipeline. We had a bit of excitement on our way to the viewpoint at Earthquake Park when a young bull moose came out of the ditch and crossed the street right in front of our bus. We got great pictures! Our last stop before lunch was at Lake Hood and Lake Spenard, the largest seaplane base in the world. We watched several landings and takeoffs, impressive with the sunny skies and mountains as a backdrop. Lunch was at a quaint restaurant with mining memorabilia, after which we walked across the road to a business that makes candies and sells an amazing amount of souvenirs. They also have reindeer that we could pet. People at home should prepare to see pictures of that! The rest of the afternoon was on our own, with the Anchorage Weekend Market getting the most attention. This huge event is just two blocks from our hotel, so we could come and go as we wished. The day was in the mid-70s so it felt great to enjoy being outdoors.-Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
