Texas Tour - February 16, 2008

A drive this morning through miles of sugar cane, onions, unknown crops
and bare plowed fields brought us to the border. We parked and walked
across the bridge over the Rio Grande to Progreso. In four hours we
managed to get haircuts and our shoes shined, buy everything from tablecloths to jewelry to vanilla, and try out some of the many restaurants in that Mexican community. The thunderstorms that originally were forecast for today never developed, and we had a hot (90 degrees), sunny, windy (gusts in the 30s) day. This afternoon we stopped at the Don-Wes (Donna and Weslaco) flea market. It's a huge complex with everything from produce to T-shirts to kitchen utensils. Tonight an option was to go to the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle National Shrine for their 5:30 mass. The mariachi mass features men and women in colorful silver-studded charro outfits singing and playing guitars, violins, trumpets, harp and organ. The music is a real highlight. When we left the church, we found ourselves almost shivering because temperatures had dropped down to 70 and the breezes still pretty
strong. It's probably not like a wind chill back home, however! Tonight we must pack up and be ready to start heading north tomorrow.
