We expected to wake up to cooler weather today, but were surprised by balmy temperatures up to 71 degrees and the continued pansies and occasional green fields. By midnight tonight, a cold front is forecasted, however, and we will have to adjust!
A 45-minute drive north of San Antonio this morning brought us to Johnson City, located in the part of Texas known as the Hill Country. A definite change of elevation, more trees, more rivers and streams, and of course the hills gave us some beautiful scenery. At Johnson City we toured LBJ's boyhood home. Then we continued west to the LBJ Ranch where a park ranger stepped on our bus to give us a guided tour. We were able to visit the recreated birthplace (a dog trot-style house with a central opening to allow breezes to cool the home), the cemetery, and for the first time, to get off the bus at the Johnson's home. The home will be opened to the
public starting next year. Videos of both Lady Bird and LBJ gave us a good reminder of the Johnson years.
Yesterday Senator Obama was in San Antonio while we were there. Today we find that Chelsea Clinton, Mike Huckabee and Senator Obama are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area as are we. We're not sure if they are following us or if we are following them!- Laurel Johnson- Tour Director
