This morning we slept in a bit with an 8:30 departure, which was a treat. It was in the 40s and misting, so we were glad we had done all of our remaining outdoor Washington DC sightseeing yesterday.
By noon we had driven out of Virginia, through part of Maryland, and into Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, home to about 70,000 Plain People. Our first stop was at Good and Plenty Restaurant. Formerly an Amish farmhouse, additions have turned the building into a restaurant with a large seating capacity. Food is served family style, and it truly is both good and plenty. We had fried chicken, roast beef and pork sausage, plus mashed potatoes and gravy, buttered noodles, carrots, corn, homemade bread and a variety of relishes and cole slaw. Then came desserts. Jello, tapioca pudding, home-made vanilla and chocolate ice cream, apple pie and shoo fly pie (a mild molasses-based pie rather like pecan pie without pecans). We did not leave hungry! From there we learned about the Amish lifestyle at the Amish Farm and Home. This too was formerly an Amish farm, now run by non-Amish to accurately present daily life in the area. Next we drove back roads. Kids were just coming home from school, farmers
were in the field plowing with teams of horses or horses and mules combined. The roads had many buggies, and every farm place had clothes hung out to dry. Using a pulley system, the lines of clothes go from the front porch of the house way up in the air to the top of another building. Our last stop in Amish country was in the town of Intercourse, PA. We looked at beautiful quilts and shopped in a grocery store with bulk foods and spices. It was on the front porch of this store that Harrison Ford made the phone call in the movie, "Witness."
Tonight we're noting a major change from the low, spacious, white marble appearance of Washington DC and the peaceful countryside of Lancaster County to the heart of Philadelphia where we are staying tonight. - Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
