Cherry Blossom Tour - Day 11

Our second full day in New York City started with the view from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building. We discovered that going early means that you don't have to wait in line, a great relief when we saw the large room ready for the crowds later on. From the top we could see "East side, West side, all around the town." And when we got back to the bus, that is
exactly where we went. First it was Little Italy where we got off the bus to experience the neighborhood. Delicious pastries from America's oldest pasticceria and rice balls in a small shop that sold Italian meats and cheeses made for great morning snacks. Next we drove up towards Central Park, past Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Again we got off the bus to walk in Central Park. This man-made park seemed a quiet haven in the bustling city. There were lots of spring flowers in bloom, people taking carriage rides (it was a sunny, warm day), bikers, and other walkers. Our drive continued on the west side of Central Park into Harlem where again
we stopped to do some exploring. And eating! A local market had not only clothing and crafts, but next door was a fish market with wonderful and inexpensive fried-to-order shrimp and scallops. Quite a few of us ate lunch right there. Then we drove the east side of Central Park, home of old money and some huge mansions. We ended our tour by driving 5th Avenue
past St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, Tiffany's and many designer shops.

The rest of the day was free. People had plans for shopping, resting, exploring and theaters.

Our brief time here has given us the chance to learn that if there is a break in traffic, everyone walks regardless of what the signs say; that New Yorkers drink very strong coffee; that dog walking can be a career; that it is expensive to live on Manhattan; and that this is a very
energetic and exciting city. - Laurel Johnson - Tour Director
