We had a short drive today, but we had breakfast in Pennsylvania, our noon meal in Maryland, and ate tonight in Virginia!
We started our morning with a walking tour through the National Cemetery in Gettysburg and listened to a reading of the Gettysburg Address where President Lincoln stood at the cemetery's dedication. The museum had displays of everything from cannons to uniforms to a bed with a cannon ball embedded in it. Our guided driving tour of the battlefield had one of the
passengers saying that they could all but hear the sound of the battle. Some were very startled to learn that the Civil War cannon could fire shells up to 3 miles. The distance depended on the size of the cannon and the size of the cannon balls that were used.
From Gettysburg we drove south, adding to the spring flowers that we have seen: tulips, saucer magnolia, flowering crab, Bradford pear, forsythia, cherry blossoms, weeping cherry and redbud. They are all so colorful.
Our visit to Mount Vernon was a little chillier and wetter than we would have liked, but we enjoyed our chance to tour George and Martha Washington's home. We did all agree, however, that we are not going to go home and paint our dining rooms the same color as George had picked for theirs!
Our last stop (by then it was raining more than a sprinkle) was in East Potomac Park. We drove along the Potomac with cherry blossoms on both sides of the bus. The trees were in full bloom with the pale pink blossoms, and the larger trees actually formed an arch of pink over the road. It truly was breathtaking. A number of people braved the weather, stood under the trees and had their pictures taken.
We are praying for dry, warmer weather tomorrow, because we have places to go and things to see! - Laurel Johnson - Tour Director
