Cherry Blossom Tour - Day 5

We have had a busy, busy day of sightseeing. We started the morning with
a walk through the spacious and beautiful Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Memorial. Open rooms of red granite covering 7.5 acres with waterfalls and sculpture represented each of his four terms in office. The memorial is located along the Tidal Basin, so we were able to spend some time just enjoying the cherry trees in full bloom and taking pictures.

Our next stop was going to the top of the Washington Monument. The view from over 500 feet above the city was most impressive, especially with the much improved weather today.

With George, our step-on guide, we worked our way up to Capitol Hill. We were privileged to be able to get into the Supreme Courtroom where we learned a little bit about how the high court operates and who sits where on the bench. After lunch in the Supreme Court cafeteria, our next stop was the Senate office buildings. Senator Coleman's staff took us on a tour of the Capitol which included riding under Constitution Avenue in the same subways the Senators would use. Everyone was impressed with the Capitol's beauty and size, as well as the opportunity to actually be inside this important building. We were not the only ones visiting today! There are crowds of people in Washington in the spring.

Next we went to the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum, the most-visited of all the Smithsonians. It was exciting to see the Spirit of St. Louis, the Wright Brothers plane, spacecraft and the many other exhibits. This year there was also a small collection of items from the Museum of American History including Dorothy's red slippers from the Wizard of Oz,
Archie Bunker's chair, George Washington's uniform, one of Mary Todd Lincoln's dresses and the dress Jackie Kennedy wore to inaugural balls.

Finally we were able to sit down and eat at a train station. Union Station is big and beautiful with many, many food choices. We recharged enough for one more stop - the U.S. Navy Memorial.

We are back at the hotel and hoping to recharge for more sights in this beautiful city tomorrow. Laurel Johnson - Tour Director
