Niagara Falls - Day 5

A morning tour of Frankenmuth, MI, introduced us to one of the cleanest, neatest, prettiest towns we had ever seen. One of the purposes that the early German settlers had was to teach Christianity to the Indians, so their beautiful St. Lorenz Lutheran Church has roots that go way back. Our tour ended at Bronner's, a Christmas shop that equals the size of 1 1/2 football fields. Christmas items from around the world gave us a real shopping challenge. There just wasn't enough time to see it all! By 11:00 we were in downtown Frankenmuth for the Glockenspiel performance, with animated figures telling the story of the Pied Piper of Hamlin.
After time to shop the downtown stores and enjoy lunch, we were back on the road.

A light afternoon rain did not keep us from our stop at the Cross in the Woods. Father Al guided us into the church. Its glass front let us stay dry and still look at the tall Crucifix and statue of the Indian girl, Kateri Tekawitha. Quite a few were willing to get a little damp and
walked out to the cross. Father Al came on the bus as we were ready to leave, prayed for us and then gave us a healthy squirt of holy water, hoping that it would reach all the way to the people sitting in the back!

Because it was still raining when we got to Mackinaw City, we went to the Dixie Saloon to eat. The two-story log building was right on Lake Michigan and gave us not only good food but a pretty view.

Some liked to think about the food they had had back at Zehnder's last night and wanted the recipe for their Old Fashioned Egg Noodles.
Bring 1/2 gallon of water to a boil. Add 1 tbsp. Zehnder's Chicken Seasoning. Toss in 1 pound of noodles. Simmer until tender, about 12-15 minutes. Drain in a colander but do not rinse. Transfer to a large bowl and add at least 1/2 stick of butter. Cover and let stand for 10 minutes
before serving. Stir before serving.
Cracker Crumb Topping: 2 cups saltine crackers, crushed fine, 3 tbsp. butter. Heat frying pan to medium. Add butter and quickly add cracker crumbs. Lightly brown, stirring constantly. Sprinkle generously on buttered noodles. - Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
