New England - Day 13

As we left Newport, RI this morning, we crossed over the longest suspension bridge in New England. The bay was beautiful in the sunshine with a huge cruise ship joining the many sailboats. Much of our morning drive was on a state highway with curves and trees right up to the edge of the road. We did enjoy a few open areas and got pretty excited to see our first cornfield. We stopped in New Haven and can now say that we have been to Yale University. We got in on part of a guided tour, learning about Nathan Hale, America's first and worst spy, and seeing Connecticut Hall where he lived. The building, dating back to the 1700s, is the oldest on campus although no longer a men's dormitory.

We had stretches of very good fall colors throughout the day, although the trees were farther from us as we finally got on interstate.

Our lunch stop today was at a diner, one of many that we saw. It was run by Greeks, the servings were very large, and the pastry cases were full of tempting desserts. The baklava was "like heaven!"

Traveling along the southern border of New York state this afternoon, we have enjoyed the scenery of the Catskill Mountains. Tonight the hotel manager announced that they had just finished putting in new beds before we came, so we will enjoy being the very first people to sleep on them. - Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
