New England - Day 6

Our hotel last night was at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in York Beach, Maine. A late start this morning gave us time to walk the beach at low tide or at least to enjoy the view as we ate breakfast. Our first stop was at Nubble Light, one of a number of coastline lighthouses. Besides
taking pictures, we also saw the lobster buoys bobbing in the water. Next we walked around Old York, a collection of houses from the 1700s, and a cemetery with graves from the same era.

Our local taste treat was rose hips, a good source of Vitamin C and much better tasting than the mineral water from Saratoga Springs!

Our highlight of the day was a whale watch out of Gloucester, MA, the oldest seaport in the United States. We had a bit of light rain on the one hour ride out to Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary. The sun came out. Almost immediately we saw humpbacked whales. A lot of whales. Some of them were feeding with heads raised up out of the water, mouths wide open. Then they would go back down for a few minutes, and we would get to see the tail go up in the air. The naturalist on board got so excited she could hardly talk because apparently this much feeding activity is quite unusual. Not everyone on board appreciated the experience, as the water was choppy. But for those whose motion sickness medication worked or who were not bothered by the movement of the boats, it was most memorable. We spent about two hours watching whales, sometimes several at a time, often very, very close to the boat.

Now almost all of us have eaten and are settled into our hotel. We head for the city of Boston tomorrow. Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
