Texas- Day 5

It's been a gray, overcast day but temperatures in the low 70s. We did have some rain while driving, but as always, it was dry for our sightseeing, some of which was outdoors. Our drive south of Houston was through miles of flat Gulf Coastal Plain. There were a few farmers out in the fields, and a number of fields had been tilled in ridges, ready to plant row crops.

By the time we got to Corpus Christi, right on Corpus Christi Bay, we were seeing some of their six refineries and large ships. Our first sightseeing was on board the aircraft carrier, the USS Lexington. We were able to climb up to the flight deck, down to lower decks, and also see a great movie on their large screen, "Fighter Pilot." Before we drove away from the ship, we were entertained by watching a man who was wind surfing. It was really windy in Corpus Christi, so he was having what looked like a thrilling ride.

Our next stop was at the Texas State Aquarium. After a dolphin show, we went on a guided tour of the facility, with everything from cardinal fish to jellyfish to birds and otters and manta rays. For many it was a highlight.

Our last sightseeing was a drive along the waterfront past the huge homes. There were quite a few that were for sale. The local Naval Air Station will be closing soon, and that, combined with the change in economy, is said to be responsible.

Our hotel this evening is right along the water across from many pleasure boats and the small fishing fleet.- Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
