Before leaving Huntsville this morning, we drove past the prison unit where all the Texas executions take place. There are five prisons within 10 miles of town, something I didn't mention until after we had all had a safe night!
The rest of our day was spent sightseeing in Houston. We took the elevator to the top of the San Jacinto Monument for a rather cloudy/hazy view of the surrounding area Houston Ship Canal. Located so close to Galveston Bay, this is the Coastal Plain of Texas and very, very flat.
On the southeast side of Houston is the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. At the Disney-style Space Center Houston, we found out that "the sky's the limit." We were able to get live updates on current missions, watch giant screen movies about life on the Space Station and learn that space suits cost $12 million apiece. A tram tour of the Space Center gave us a look at some of the space program's history as well as where the astronauts train. It was a very interesting and educational afternoon.
The weather has continued to be mild (low to mid 70s today) and there are many trees already leafed out. But one of the group noted that "not all the wind is in South Dakota!"
