Arizona - Day 11 & 12

Day 11 and 12
Sunday, March 1st
Anita, (Nat Park Ranger) gave us an excellent tour of Tumacacori Nat Historical Park. It was the site of one of the first missions in the area settled by the O'odham. The people were led by a Jesuit Priest Father Kino. This church is not used and has three architectural designs as three priests were at this settlement during the early years. In 1920, restoring of the adobe church after weather and souvenir hunters . The interior and original contents and a new roof are still visible today.

Nogales AZ/Mexico was the next stop of the day. Several walked across to shop in Nogales, Mexico , while others shopped on the Arizona side. It took those going into Mexico only 10 to 15 minutes to come back across. Two hours was spent shopping at Tubac - meaning" sinking water" - a Pima Village when Fr. Kino visited the area in 1691. This was the first military base in Arizona established in 1752.

San Xavier (ha-vere' ) Del Bac Mission was our next and last adventure of the day. This mission was established in 1700 by Jesuit Priest Fr. Kino. The complex as seen today was completed in 1797 by Franciscian missionaries. The church is considered the finest example of Spanish Misson Architecture in the United States There is continuing restoration going on the outside of the church as weather elements change. This is the only Kino mission in the nation that is still active in preaching to Tohono O'odham. There were several people making what they call pop flops and are served with honey or sugar. The high today in Tucson was 92 degrees.
