Arizona Day 8, 9 10

Feb. 28, 2009
Saturday began with a tour of Shamrock Farms' dairy operation, including all the 'farm fragrances'. Founded in the 1920's by an Irish Immigrant, they now milk 10,000 cows per day. In the process, the milk is never touched by human hands! Milk and wonderful ice cream samples were enjoyed by our group.
The afternoon found us touring the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. We toured at our own pace and had lunch at some point along the walk. People observed numerous plants, animals, and minerals found in a desert setting. Marvelous weather has befriended us along our journey.

Another bright sunny day in Arizona!! Our first stop today was at the Orange Patch orange grove where we enjoyed fresh squeezed orange juice as we learned about orange farming. Many oranges hitched a ride back to the Midwest at the close of the presentation!!!
Our next stop was Tortilla Flat, an old camping spot frequented by travelers during the 1800's, because of readily available grass and water for horses. Now a restaurant, small shopping area, and, best of all, prickly pear ice cream!
At Canyon Lake our group enjoyed a relaxing boat ride while eating our lunch. The scenery was spectacular!!

Sun-up arrives quickly in Arizona and the sky is azure with about three wispy, white clouds floating around. Step-on guide, Howard, informs us there are about 320 days of sun per year.
Also he tells us Arizona was once covered with water, so when walking in the desert, sea shells can be found. Arizona has more mountains than Switzerland. Just under 30% of Arizona is reservation land with 22 different tribes.
His tour took us to visit the capitol, Old Town Scottsdale, the Heard Art Museum, and many sights along the way.Our day culminated with dinner and a show at the Arizona Opry.
