California - Day 3

Our day started with a rain/snow mixture. We didn't travel too far before we turned off on a scenic byway in Utah, and by then the skies were starting to clear so we could see the tops of the mountains. Our drive took us along the Colorado River in a narrow canyon with spectacular red rocks on both sides. At the end of the byway, we drove into Arches National Park. By the time we had spent time at the Visitor Center, it had begun to snow. On our drive through the park, the higher the elevation, the more it snowed. We could just barely make out the rock formations! Eventually we were at 5,000 feet elevation, the temperature was steadily dropping and slush was building up on the road. We decided to head for safer elevations.

On our afternoon drive, we had no snow, the sun was shining, the skies were cloudless, and the scenic stops along the San Rafael Swell were very impressive. Reader boards told us about the canyon where Butch Cassidy and cowboys had spent time. We wondered how anyone had gotten down into the canyon.

We noted that there were no homes visible along today's entire interstate route until we got almost to Beaver, UT, our destination for the night. - Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
