California - Day 4

Temperatures have been cooler than normal, but this morning leaving Beaver, UT it was only 21 degrees. Our drive was through more sagebrush and desert vegetation. We saw some sheep and cattle grazing, even though Midwest farmers thought there wasn't anything there for them to eat. There was some irrigation in the valley between the mountains, and then crops or alfalfa could be grown.

Our scenery has been so varied. There was a beautiful stretch of interstate along the Virgin River through a narrow canyon with steep rock walls on either side.

There have been entertaining discussions about when to change watches as we try to keep up with time zone changes and the start of daylight saving time. This morning, as we crossed into Nevada, we made the last change for some time as we switched to Pacific time.

We arrived in Las Vegas before noon. A drive through downtown and the Strip introduced us to this interesting place. After checking into the hotel, everyone headed out for a free afternoon. People explored some of the huge resorts along the Strip, tried their luck at machines and
people-watched. This evening, some went to a show while the rest of the group downtown for the Fremont Street Experience. The computerized sound and light show was entertaining, but so was all of the activity along the pedestrian-only street. Driving the Strip after dark gave us a look at the water show at the Bellagio and all of the neon lights for which Las Vegas is famous.-Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
