California - Day 7

It was a little cloudy this morning as we drove back down to the San Diego Harbor for our tour of the aircraft carrier, USS Midway. An audio tour had us learning as we walked around this massive ship. Planes are still being restored to put on display here, but there were many planes on the flight deck. We really appreciated the on board elevator to get up there, because its size made for a good amount of morning exercise. It was so interesting learning how the planes were launched and landed. We did not envy their sleeping quarters, however!

Our lunch was at Seaport Village, also along the waterfront. We could choose indoor restaurants or eating at a variety of walk up stands. We thought it was wonderful to sit outside with palm trees, birds, planters of flowers and sun on the 11th of March. Although jackets felt best in the shade, the sky had cleared, the sun was out, and that felt great.

On our drive north along the coast on I-5, there were 5-6 lanes of traffic in each direction. Along the way, we saw some military training activity at Camp Pendleton. South and north of that, the hillsides were filled with rows of stucco homes and red tile roofs.

Our afternoon stop was at San Juan Capistrano. The swallows won't come back until March 19, but we saw some of their mud nests with just a round hole for the birds to fly into. The mission, known as the Queen of the string of 21 missions started by Father Junipero Serra, had original
buildings and courtyards of flowering plants and trees. Our guide was so interesting and informative, giving all kinds of California history along with mission history. We stopped in a church built in the 1980s in the exact style of the early mission church. The gold front of the church (called a "retablo") was most impressive.

Our sleeping quarters for tonight, much larger than those on the USS Midway, are across from Disney. That's our goal for tomorrow.-Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
