A 5:15 AM departure got us to the Anchorage airport in plenty of time. We discovered that many other people were also up early, creating long lines at the counters. All of our souvenirs had been packed, and although no one had to pay extra charges for overweight bags, it was obvious that there were some new carryons filled with purchases. We had done our part for the Alaska economy.
Our flights were smooth, we had time in Seattle for lunch, and our arrival in Minneapolis was earlier than originally scheduled. The Southwest Coaches driver was at the baggage claim to meet us, and we started our drive home. As it got later, many were delighted to see stars and the night sky for the first time since leaving home. Others said that they were looking forward to sleeping with total darkness outside instead of having it light all night long.
Having traveled together for 11 days, it was hard saying goodbye to new friends. We have had so many experiences together and have learned so much. Perhaps the saying is true, that once you’ve been to Alaska, you never come all the way back home. -Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
