
Blog, Day 1 and 2
We left home Friday afternoon and got acquainted with the rest of our fellow travelers. A stay overnight in Eden Prairie made it a lot easier to get to the airport by 5:20 am. We checked luggage all the way through to Juneau, made it successfully through the security checkpoint (only two or three had the honor of being personally wanded and examined) and found the plane to Seattle. It was a smooth flight with nearly clear views all the way. The major mountains close to Seattle were particularly impressive as were the green forests and the water of Puget Sound. With our pre-printed boarding passes in hand, we had time for a quick early lunch before boarding the Alaska Air flight to Juneau. Again, a smooth ride and entertaining flight attendants made the time pass quickly. We arrived to find that it was mild and partly sunny in Juneau, rather rare for this rainforest community. Our hotel is right downtown, and with an
entire free afternoon, we have been taking advantage of the warm sunshine. We have walked up hills and down hills and found the only flat land in Juneau which is parallel to the water where a cruise ship is docked. There are flowers all over, most noticeably the fireweed which is growing
wild all over. It is a beautiful capital city and the only one to which you cannot drive.
