Door County - Day 3

The weather today was perfect: not too hot, not too cold, and bright sunshine. We started the day with breakfast of Swedish pancakes and lingonberries at Al Johnson's Restaurant in Sister Bay. By the time we had finished our meal, the goats had been allowed up on the sod roof and were almost posing for pictures.

We met Kathleen our tour guide again for another day of sightseeing, this time on the mainland of Door County. A country market was our first stop, where we stocked up on chocolate-covered cherries, cherry wine, cherry jam, and a variety of other taste treats. From there we drove to Bjorklunden near Bailey's Harbor, where a local family has built a peace chapel in the woods along Lake Michigan. Beautiful murals and wood carving inside this small chapel are impressive, as is the view of the lake. An area supper club opened just to serve us a wonderful noon lunch. It felt good to walk off a bit of our lunch as we toured Peninsula State Park and the historic lighthouse. Many climbed all the way to the top. We had driven past so many shops and galleries on our tour, so finally we got to do some shopping in Fish Creek. When it was time to leave, people came with both packages and ice cream cones!

After a short rest at the hotel, we drove to Ellison Bay. The barbecued ribs at Mink River Basin were a delicious end to this full day.- Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
