We drove off the peninsula of Door County this morning and continued west. We had traveled the same highway before, so although the scenery was beautiful, it was not particularly unique. Which was a very good thing because today it rained. And sometimes it poured. We had a break, however, and were kept dry at our lunch stop. That weather break continued until we were inside the Van Der Geest Dairy, west of Wausau. What an amazing operation. Their freestall barn is 1/3 mile long. Milking is done 24/7 with each of the 3,000 cows getting milked three times in each 24-hour period. We were able to walk on an elevated walkway overlooking the entire operation. From there we traveled back roads, very hilly and scenic, sometimes in pouring rain, until we got to a country store run by local Mennonites. Once again the weather allowed us to stay dry as we went in to buy bulk foods and excellent ice cream cones. It poured again as we continued west, then stopped for us to enjoy our late afternoon at Cabin Ridge Rides. We rode in a large wagon behind Percheron horses on a quiet wooded trail back to a hand-built cabin. The setting was lovely, the food was delicious and the story telling was a bonus. Tonight we are staying at a hotel in Eau Claire.- Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
