New England - Day 1-4

Tonight, Sunday, we are in the Adirondack Mountains in Saratoga Springs, NY. It was mid-afternoon today when suddenly the lay of the land changed from slightly rolling to mountains in the distance. The scenery is lovely with many colorful trees. In Saratoga Springs, we tasted the local mineral water, and discovered that unlike the escort's promise that it would make us young and beautiful, it just made us wonder if we could have lived without tasting it! The mineral water was salty and naturally carbonated and really quite awful. The other faucets at the spring were constantly running with sweet water, and people were filling up jug after jug to bring home. The town of Saratoga Springs itself is beautiful with many large mansions. We drove past a number of them and will see more tomorrow.

Earlier today we stopped at the Floral Clock in Niagaraa Falls and drove to Lockport, NY where we went to the local Presbyterian Church. After an introductory talk, we were free to admire and actually touch historic Tiffany windows. The most impressive one was of Nicodemus coming at night to Jesus. Nicodemus is carrying a lamp that is made out of glass colored so that, regardless of the time of day, the light seems always to be burning. Across the street was the Erie Canal Discovery Center. The exhibits included the sense that we were on a barge going through the lock system. Afterwards we could walk along a section of the actual Erie Canal.

In the previous days we have gotten nicely acquainted with our traveling companions, discovered that we sound good singing together, crossed the Detroit River south into Canada, and have done sightseeing at Niagara Falls. The last two days we have had rain while we drove but when we were off the bus and sightseeing, it was just fine. In fact, the sun came out for our time in Niagara. We have been blessed. - Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
