We started our day by visiting Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and learning about the 19 Pueblo Tribes of New Mexico. This was followed by a drive around Old Albuquerque. We headed west on I40/Route 66. At one point there was snow up to the road on the driver's side. Riders on the door side saw mesas and hills and no snow before arriving at our noon break. Everyone enjoyed the tour through Painted Desert and Petrified Forest with photo stops along the way.
We did a quarter mile walk over the lava flow formed by Sunset Crater which is the youngest, least eroded cinder cone in the San Francisco volcanic field. After stopping at Cameron Trading Post, over 1/2 of the 21 people climbed to the top of the tower at Desert View, our first stop at Grand Canyon, and had their first spectacular views of the Canyon. The weather was perfect for
Canyon viewing. We continued to enjoy the breathtaking views with stops that included Canyon View. To conclude our enjoyment of the Canyon, we attended the IMAX presentation on the Canyon..
It was another beautiful day for a drive down Oak Creek Canyon Road into Sedona. After shopping time in Sedona, we boarded Pink Jeeps and got a closeup view of the Red Rock surrounding Sedona. If you have traveled on an old gravel road , that was smooth in comparison to what we were on today. On to visit the Montezuma Well a limestone sink hole thought to have formed by the collapse of a cavern. The 55 foot deep and perhaps twice that across well provided irrigation water for Indians more than 1,000 years ago. Nearby Montezuma Castle , as cliff dwelling structure built into the recess of a white stone cliff 70 feet from the ground is the best remaining example of a cliff dwelling in this area. Tonight we are settled in in Phoenix, AZ and look forward to a city tour tomorrow. Note: Written by Rose Marie Wingert and Sandy Moose
