Texas - Day 11

The forecast for today wasn't the best. A cold front had moved in, so San Antonio's high 70s and low 80s of last week were replaced by temperatures in the mid-50s, cloudy skies and a breeze. Plus we were supposed to get rain by 10:00 that continued all day. We were so blessed that we got no rain at all, and sweaters and jackets took care of the chilly day. (OK, so we know it's colder back home...and we are enjoying the flowers and palm trees.)

Our step-on guide gave us quite a city tour this morning. We started with a visit to Mission San Jose, dating back to the 1700s and known as the Queen of the Missions. We saw where the Native Americans and the priests lived, the still-active church, the grainery and the irrigation ditches that brought water to the mill. An excellent movie in the visitor center tied everything together for us. We drove by San Antonio sights and made stops at the Spanish Governor's Palace with its beautiful courtyard and La Villita, the Mexican village that grew up close to the Alamo. The original buildings are now shops and galleries for artists of all sorts, and the limestone church is still an active parish. Our final stop was at the War Memorial.

This afternoon we came empty-handed to the Buckhorn Museum. In earlier days, if we had come with a set of horns or rattlesnake rattles, we could have traded them for a beer. Instead, we saw their amazing collection of horns and rattles as well as hundreds of species of mounted animals from around the world. They also had some nice exhibits of Texas history.

Our final stop was at El Mercado, a Mexican marketplace. It was similar to being across the border, but with a San Antonio feel. - Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
