This morning's news was covering many accidents around San Antonio due to weather. It was very foggy and drizzly, so roads were slick. We spent almost all morning at San Antonio Shoes (SAS), first touring the factory and then shopping. The workers, mostly women, in the factory are paid by the piece, so the faster they work, the more salary they make. We were able to watch many of the steps from cutting pieces out of the leather to the finished product, both shoes and handbags. Quite a few made purchases in the General Store, and all of us enjoyed their five cent coffee or cookies and ice cream.
We had hoped that the fog would clear for our ride to the observation deck of the Tower of the Americas. Unfortunately we could only see about half the tower when we arrived, but everyone was eager to do the visit regardless. We started with an entertaining ride over Texas, with a big screen, great photography and special effects. We could feel the moving air from the helicopter, the spray of water from a rodeo animal, a quick burst of air from the rattlesnake and the jolts of a bucking bronco or a football tackle. Although the elevator ride to the top gradually took us into the fog, there were many displays at the top that were interesting. The grounds around the base of the tower were probably the highlight, with huge fountains and many floral plantings.
A free afternoon gave people time to rest, shop the President's Day sale at Macy's, go to a movie or walk along the Riverwalk. By late afternoon, the fog had disappeared, some patches of blue sky were starting to appear, and the temperature was rising. Tomorrow it is supposed to be back in the high 70s or low 80s, and we have to leave town!- Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
