Texas - Day 13

What a glorious day we had today. By the time we got to the hill country north of San Antonio, it was sunny, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, and it was 70 degrees. We loved being outside for our visit to LBJ's boyhood home and the LBJ Ranch. At the ranch, we got a CD to guide us through the various stops. We saw the reconstructed birthplace, the little school where LBJ started attending at 4 years of age, and for the first time, we were able to visit part of the Texas White House. After Lady Bird's death, the house belongs to the national park service. They are opening up rooms as they are restored. Today we visited LBJ's 28x28 office. The view from the patio overlooking the Pedernales River was so peaceful.

We're finding out that the middle and southern parts of Texas are in the worst drought in history. In the Dallas/Fort Worth area and north, they are several inches below normal precipitation, but not as bad as the hill country. We saw a herd of almost 30 deer racing across the road, and the staff said there's nothing for even the deer to eat.

Our afternoon was spent driving to the Fort Worth area and watching the temperatures get to at least 77 degrees. It was just perfect weather.

The hotel this evening had not only the expected happy hour, but also served what amounted to our evening meal. Plus we were celebrating a birthday all day, so we had dessert of delicious chocolate layer cake.
