California - Day 16

Our first stop this morning was just outside Salt Lake City at the Utah Olympic Site. At the 2002 Winter Olympics, this was the venue for ski jumping, luge, the skeleton and bobsledding. Our guided tour took us to the top of the bobsled run and farther up to the top of the ski jump. It
was a long way to the bottom. We learned about how the track is maintained and about all the year-round events held at the park. Our guide was a champion in the luge and is currently the senior champion. He was the announcer in the 2002 Olympics and will announce again in the 2010 Olympics.

Driving today was through high desert country, with most elevations at 6,000 feet or more. There was a variety of scenery with canyons and rock formations, but most of the day was miles of treeless sagebrush. We did see a large flock of sheep being moved, herded by a man on horseback and two Border Collies. We also saw many pronghorn antelope along the way.

Even though the desert looks totally unproductive, we saw several wind farms, an area of oil production and a very large BP natural gas field.
We are staying in Cheyenne, WY tonight. - Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
