Bright sun, not a cloud in the sky - a perfect day for going to the San
Diego Zoo. Jackets felt good with the again lower than normal
temperatures. Our zoo visit started with a double-decker narrated bus
tour. The driver stopped many times, giving us good looks at the hundreds of varieties of animals in this famous place. The four-month old baby giraffe was a real hit. After the bus tour, we were able to walk on our own into more secluded areas where the bus couldn't go. There were also shows to see and a Skyfari overhead tram to ride from one end of the zoo to the other. The pandas were busy eating and the monkeys and apes were so entertaining.
Driving through downtown San Diego brought us to San Diego Bay where we had a harbor cruise. The first hour took us to the north, past US Navy and Marine facilities including a submarine in dry dock. We passed harbor seals being trained by the Navy to detect underwater mines. An unexpected treat was seeing a grey whale that had wandered out of the ocean
into the bay. The south half of the excursion took us under the Coronado Bridge, past high rise condominiums, homes on Coronado Island and more of the Navy's Pacific Fleet including a hospital ship. It was a relaxing and very informative end to a full day of sightseeing.-Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
