Wisconsin at its Best - Day 2

We were on the road this morning, driving on curving roads through beautiful Wisconsin hills and valleys, getting an early start to make sure that we could see cheese-making in progress. At Carr Valley Cheese the cheese is made by hand. We were able to see how curds are separated from the whey, pressed into rounds of Cheddar, then dipped three times in wax before going through the aging process. Sixty or seventy different kinds of cheese, some of them totally unique, are made by Carr Valley, and we were able to taste and purchase cheese to take home, thanks to a cooler and dry ice. We continued south, driving between fields of corn and dairy farms, enjoying the contour and strip farming as well as all of the trees. By the time we got to House on the Rock, it was raining, so it was great that today was an inside day. We're not sure how to describe our visit to House on the Rock. Certainly a creative mind had to design both the house itself and the maze of collections that are part of the visit. There was the carousel with over 200 animals, none of them horses. The doll carousel and doll houses. The circus exhibit. Music machines. The Streets of Yesterday. The organ room. Those of us who walked the entire route went a leisurely 2 1/2 miles, so we were not only entertained but also got our exercise for the day. It was a wonderful experience. Another scenic rural Wisconsin drive brought us to the city of LaCrosse, located on the Mississippi River. Tonight a dinner cruise on the LaCrosse Queen provided good food and great entertainment by "The Journeymen," who performed Neil Diamond, Elvis, John Denver and other familiar favorites. The Mississippi River scenery was relaxing and peaceful, a perfect end to our day. - Laurel Johnson, Tour Director
